Learn About Multiplication Patterns of 10 In this lesson, let's learn about multiplication patterns. We’re going to use multiplication patterns to find the product of 20 and 1000. So, we’re trying to find the product of 20 and 1000. Well, let's look at the patterns that we can look up. What do we know? We know 2 x 1 = 2. That’s a simple multiplication. Well, if I add zero to one of the numbers, in this we have two, I have two zeros, 20 x 1. Well, the result we’ll also see one zero added. The result will also see one zero added. Similarly, if we multiply 20 with 10, what we will see is instead of one zero, since we added one zero to this part, we will see another zero added to the product. See these two zeros here? It means two zeros here. Similarly, if we multiply 20 x 100, what do we see? Well, I've got one zero and I've got two zeros here. That should give me 2000 because I've got three zeros, so 2 x 1 is 2. If I add three zeros on the left, I add three zeros on the right. Similarly, if we now try 20 x 1000, I have added four zeros, one here and one, two, three here. So, what should I expect? Four zeros here and the number two which is from the pattern anyway; so, what's 20 x 1000? It's 20,000. That’s answer we were looking for. We can use patterns to figure this out. Let's use the same patterns to try and solve another problem. We need to find the missing number. What's 4 x 8? Well, we know 4 x 8 is 32. So, K = 32. Now, let's use this pattern to figure the rest out. We have 4 x 8 = 32. I'm going to write this again, 4 x 8 = 32. So, now if we have 40 and on the right we have 320 x something, that’s what we have to figure out. Well we added one zero here, and one zero got added, 32 and 32, same pattern. If we add one zero here and one zero here, that’s exactly what we were expecting. So, this must remain the same because I've added one zero to the left of the equal sign and one zero to the right of the equal sign. So, R becomes eight which means R becomes 8. Now, 40 x 80, well if 4 x 8 is 32, and if we add a zero here and a zero here, two zeros. I expect to add two zeros here. So, 40 x 80 is 3200. So, what we expecting the answer to be here? The answer here we’re expecting Y = 3200 because that’s the result. Again, we just simply used patterns. A key to remember is if we've got a pattern established, if we add a zero to any of the numbers being multiplied. As a result of that addition, we will also see a zero added to the result.
