Learn about the Place Value of Digits in Greater Decimals In this video, let’s learn about the name of each of the places occupied by digits in a number. The problem asks us the name of the place occupied by each digit in 42,365.1427. In order to do this, let’s learn about the place value. The place value is assigned to every digit and the way we do this is we look at the decimal spot and then we’ve placed the first digit to the right, second digit to the right, third, forth, similarly one, two, three and four are the places of digits to the left of the decimal point and you’ll notice against each one of this we have the name or the value on top and the name on the bottom So this is the table of the diagram that we should use to determine the value of this. So in this case, we will right down 42,365.1427. In order to do this let’s map this to the value diagram that I have here. So this number is the first place to the right of the decimal so it’s the tenths. this number is the second place to the right which is the hundredths similarly two and seven. And to the left of I’ve got five digits so I will have five here and the value will be 10,000. So this will be 10,000 will be the fifth digit value. Now, the way to do this is actually relatively simple if you remember this. We can basely write the number down same way as we did, look at the decimal point and simply name them tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten thousandths similarly here ones, tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten thousandths. Now, that we’ve done that it allows us to name the place for each of the digits so the digit four is on the ten thousandths place, the digit two is on the thousandths place, digit three is in the hundredths place, six is in the tenths place, five is in the ones place, one is the in the tenths place and so on.
