The Albatross is one of the largest flying birds. They’re spectacular gliders able to use their long wing span to fly without flapping for hours. The plumage of an albatross is similar to a gull. With a dark back and wings and white underside, bird watching can be an exciting tourist attraction. The Northern Royal Albatross Colony was established in 1919. Since then, helping to grow and protect the population have been priorities. The Northern Royal Albatross is considered endangered. In this colony, the birds are not held in captivity and are free to fly and gather food. Albatross tend only to live on offshore islands and come ashore for the sole purpose of breeding. This means the albatross spends the majority of its time at sea. Because of its time on the water, the graceful albatross is known as the symbol of the southern sea.
