LG Chocolate 3 – Review
This is Phone Arena’s video review of the LG Chocolate 3 VX8560 for Verizon Wireless. As the name implies, this is the third generation Chocolate phone. But unlike the first three that were sliders, this one has more traditional clamshell form factor to it. Available in both black and light blue colors. The black model has the reflecting finish on the front similar to the Decoy and a soft touch coating on the back.
The front features a 1.76 inch display scroll wheel and 2 megapixel camera. On the left side, it’s a 3.5 millimeter headset jack, volume rocker, voice command button and microUSB port. On the right side are the lock and music button and microSDHC card slot that accepts of the 8 gigabyte memory cards. Flopping the phone open resolves a standard 2.2 inch QVGA display and keypad.
The display features an automatic brightness adjustment similar to the one that is going to Dare. That will make it brighter or darker depending on surrounding light levels. The keypad has a plastic you feel to it but they keys are large and respond well. But for those who will click sound when pressed. The external display ad scroll wheel are used together to access the music player, my pictures, the camera, calendar and the inbox.
We found this useful but are like to be able to add other menus to it such as Bluetooth, contacts and ring tones. The music player is pretty straight forward and easy to use with the categorizing music by all songs, playlist, artist, genres and albums. Unlike the Dare that categorizes album songs alphabetically the Chocolate 3 lists them according to their ID3 track number. When the song starts to playback you can access the player and it will continue playing.
This multitasking allows you to send and receive messages or use the browser without having to stop playback. The album art it uses the wallpaper on the internal display with the color graphics shows on the external. You can also use the internal or external keypad for the same operations which is changing tracks and albums.
Music quality to the front stereo speakers is good. You can also use a Bluetooth stereo headset or wired 3.5-millimeter headphones. There’s also the option to use the built in FM transmitter which transmits music over an FM signal that can be picked up by a nearby radio. However, in parts of the country where there are a lot of FM radio stations it’s difficult to find an unused frequency though it provide good quality playback from the phone. Because of this, this features more of a novelty with something to be use day to day.
The Chocolate 3 is also the first phone can corporate the new dashboard program powered Adobe. When launch, it shows you lists of channels that you can scroll through. If you go to news, it shows you the top headlines of the day and will link you to other news outlets such as NBC and ABC. Going to weather, it will display the current conditions in three cities. Pressing the right it will show a three day forecast. You can customize the locations by entering the ZIP code or City and State. Going to get channels allows you to modify your listings. There are currently 15 basic channels available but only 10 can be added and viewed at once.
In the upcoming ones there will also be premium channels that you can subscribe to but will incur a monthly fee. The call quality that we experienced while using the Chocolate 3 was truly amazing and it was noticeably better than when we used the Dare. Well, placing the variety of test calls we heard no static or background noise through the earpiece speaker. Voices were crystal clear and sounded completely natural even when turning the earpiece volume up to high. Callers that were using a landline phone noted that our voice sounded clear and didn’t suffer from the tunnel effect that we’ve got while using the Dare. As of now, we believe the Chocolate 3 provides the best call quality other than any current Verizon phone. The signal reception which is also quite good without equal to the Motorola V9m. we’re able to place and receive calls in 0706 areas with the Samsung Jute and the LG VX8350 don’t.
Overall, we’re quite pleased with the new Chocolate 3. It has numerous features with the music player being its mean selling point. However, the call quality was quite excellent and should not be overlooked. The only disappointment came from the 2 megapixel camera as images were not as good as from the NV2 or V9m. but we’re willing to overlook this flaw as the camera is not the main selling feature of the device.
