Tarra: Hi! My name is Tarra. I'm from Jackson, Mississippi. Is bipolar disorder a life long condition? Michael H. Allen: Tarra, we tend to think of bipolar disorder as a chronic condition but you may have episodes of the illness at long distances apart. So people sometimes will have an episode and then go for 10 years before they have another episode and may do very well in between. On the other hand there are people who have lots of episodes close together and it may need more intensive treatments. So, we tend to think of it as not necessarily permanent or chronically disabling but your risk of having future episodes once you've had one episode that risk will always be there and so it's good to have a doctor and follow their advice.
