Maintaining Work Relationship with a Family Member Bill: Hi my name is Bill from Sarasota, Florida. I would like to know how to maintain a professional relationship with my son while working in a family business. Dr. Patrick Rowan: Okay Bill, I'm sure a lot of people have to deal with this and it’s really a question of boundaries and how you apply those boundaries in different environments. So be clear with your child at home this is the way we act, it’s okay to call me dad, it’s okay to fool around, it’s okay to have the same fun that we always have. But then at work tell him as soon as we walk through that door you'll have to remember we’re colleagues, we’re co-workers, I'm the boss you have to call me Mr. Bill or whatever the other co-workers are calling you. So I think that is going to be the signal to him, we walk through the door, we’re at work, this is the way we have to act now. And then try not to bring work at home, try not to discuss work related issues inside the house so that you're not blurring those boundaries, so that you're not blurring the relationship of this is work relationship or I'm the boss, this is home relationship or I'm dad. Good luck with that that’s going to be tough and you're going to have to work on it on regular basis.
