Mayim Bialik Interview
Audra Lowe: All right, well she first entered your living room as a teenager with their floppy flower hat and their amazing dance moves on the hit series Blossom. I felt it was just yesterday too but she’s all grown up now and she’s all grown up now and she’s a mother, Mayim Bialik is here. She’s talking about her long lasting careers and actress and also what is like racing kids your own way because you really just do your own thing and you don’t care about what anybody think so. Well, I love that, good to have you here.
Mayim: Thank you nice to be here.
Audra Lowe: We’re going to talk about your family in just a second because I know that you’ve been talking about the way that you decided to raise your two kids. But let’s talk about your career first because we mentioned everybody knew you in the 90’s obviously and blossom. You had a long lasting career in television. How have you maintained that?
Mayim: It’s tough; I mean when blossom ended I didn’t work for awhile. I went to college and I went grad school and I had two kids. And I think that’s given me a little bit of an edge because it didn’t make people love me for this whole time. I give them a break and now if they want to love me again, that’s nice.
Audra Lowe: That’s when you sing. You mentioned you went to college. I read that you got a PHD.
Mayim: -- science from UCLA.
Audra Lowe: Oh my god. That’s totally different, totally opposite. Are doing anything with the degree?
Mayim: I mean originally, I thought I would possibly be a research professor. But because of the way we ended up kind of falling in love with raising our kids. I realized I wanted to be home with them more and believe it or not, acting its more flexible than being a research professor. I do teach a neuroscience class to middle schoolers in the home school community where we live. But I'm pretty much I'm doctor mom and then I'm working 0125.
Audra Lowe: Kids can get anything pass to here.
Mayim: Only a neuropsychiatry.
Audra Lowe: Right. When it comes to the roles that you take, are you picky about them? How do you pick and choose what you're going to take?
Mayim: I wish I could afford to be picky at this point but I really go out on whatever audition. I'm call out for. You know Brenda Hampton who does Equal life of the American teenagers; she was a writer on blossom, so she hired me on secret life. So I have some people who I worked with back in the day hire me but I really just go out on auditions and kind of take what comes.
Audra Lowe: And see what happens. Make the role your own because that’s what you really have done and on the roles you have too. I know that you are raised by first generation Jewish-American parents. How much did they influence not only your acting career but then also your life as a mom and how you raise your kids?
Mayim: I think coming from an immigrant background, it definitely, it in steals in you a sense of humility and modesty and frugality which has been helpful for me both dealing with the industry which is so much materialistic and full of so much excess that can be overwhelming. And also as I parented, I've learned to kind of take it back to basics. What do I really need for my kids, what do they really need? And I think a lot of that is kind of my immigrant background.
Audra Lowe: And speaking of that too, you’ve decided to raise your kids, it says here that you had birth them naturally. You home schooled them. You have something that’s called an elimination communication method. What is that mean?
Mayim: Yes, so we kind of do it general attachment parenting so sort of umbrella is what our parenting style is called. And then there are a lot of things people do and don’t do. We did a homebirth, not everybody does. We did extended breastfeeding, not everybody does. But one thing we do is something called elimination communication where you learn the cues that your child gives when they need to use the restroom. And if you reinforce those cues very early on, they will give them stronger and stronger and you can kind of do the best thing for the planet which is not just use cloth but eliminate the need for diapers.
Audra Lowe: And you make your own like shampoos in different, different parts?
Mayim: Yeah, we are those people and its super interesting I think for people to hear a celebrity do that. But I'm the spokesperson for the Holistic mom’s network and there is an entire nation of women who do this, who choose to make our own shampoo and soap. And it takes a little more time but then it actually saves time and money in the long run and so.
Audra Lowe: Right and I'm seeing what you're eliminating and taking out of those products.
Mayim: Exactly, right.
Audra Lowe: Well, thanks so much for stopping by. It’s good to have you here. Congratulations.
Mayim: And congratulations to you.
Audra Lowe: Thank you.
