Jennifer Matthews: Tequila Johnston is on the hunt to find out what's causing her severe abdominal pain. Today, she's in the ER at the Ohio State University Medical Center. But tequila didn't have to leave the ER for her ultrasound. The portable, wireless, laptop version came to her. Dr. David Bahner: You're getting extremely good image quality with the laptop. Jennifer Matthews: Doctor David Bahner advocates using portable ultrasounds in medical centers. Transmitters can send the images from radiologists to surgeons to intensive care docs throughout the hospital. Doctor Bahner says the portable device is like a stethescope for the 21st century. Dr. David Bahner: You need quick answers, and the ultrasound device allows us to answer focused questions on the patient. Jennifer Matthews: The laptop ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the organs to create these black, gray and white images. And it's all done without radiation. Now, patients can see what's causing their pain. Doctor Bahner believes more doctors should take advantage of the laptop at the bedside -- allowing patients to know what's wrong right away. This is Jennifer Matthews reporting.
