Model Aviation in Muncie Indiana Jim Watt: This is the Academy of Model Aeronautics flying field in Muncie. Over 1000 acres of playground for those who like to fly. Jean Pallet: We got a formation out front. It happens to be a single blade propeller. There is a timer here which determines how long the engine runs. The engine is very basically just a short to bring it up. They are basically powered glazer and there’s a second function on the timer and it gets to a two minute mark. This line path and the tail goes up and that’s the point of a big shooting notion and it’s just sort of get down so to keep it on the field with motion side. Chuck Markos: We’re having a contest for FAI free flight models. FAI stands French Federation Aeronautic International. Now pardon my French and there is an international class of models and that’s all over the world and this contest is part of what we call the America’s crop competition where people will try to gain points over the period of the year to see it was a top guide in a particular class and the task for the model today is to probably get a two minute flight. Male: Well, I did realize as a kid I started when I was a little bit old than he was because my father was a model and I did it very actively in my teenage year that from ages 16 on I can adopt out into cars, boats and other interest and I then I picked it up in about another about five years ago. The motors I’m getting interested and again and so I’m back out. Chuck Markos: When I was five years old that’s when I started aviation to be glamorous. You have to remember it wasn’t like everybody will hop in an airliner and starting of course the country to see grandma and grandpa and thinking like that. It was all very I would use and so forth and so it was a thrill just to watch airplanes at that time. We used to go out to the local airports and watch them fly. The boredom meant and I've been out ever since. Male: Look what he has she got me here and then they just go and it’s really can stay up the longest. Let me climb on a motorcycle and go chase them down. I think they love that part when they do the flying. Jim Watt: Year two the National Model Aviation Museum. The world’s most extensive collection of model airplanes. Rich LaGrange: There are about 10,400 artifacts in the museum on the records. Now all the models you see in here are flying models. That’s one of the criteria. A lot of people think that these are just to look. That these were flying models, of course now they have museum pieces and will never fly again but we’ll have them here for hopefully generations to come. We have examples of almost every model airplane that has been made especially the famous ones from far back in the early days of model aviation to the day as much one day I had a nanny 2 year old man standing here and he had tears running down in his face and he said “I have built about everyone of these airplanes, he says I am here since I was kid” and it was so just emotional for him and I think that’s what we really enjoy and here is the fact that these people see planes are heavens. For 50 cents worth of ball so you can make an airplane or even make one out of a form, paper plate for kids and all the way any of the amount of money that anyone has they could still enjoy modeling. There are so many different facets of model airplanes that you can go in at any part of the hobby and going at a level you want. That is designed and build by Monarch Gil from New Zealand all the way to Ireland in one flight he can have 81.6 miles so only like several and it’s done across the line and goes for the model airplane because a modern airplane cannot win to be called a model airplane and cannot weigh more than 5 kilograms and that’s 11 times with the fuel. So that will fill that way on one gallon of fuel. Kent Mitchell: We have some of the folks guys and enormous equipment out here you know 30 to 40 pound weight and wind like this won’t effect them at all. When you get in to some these little guys like cars and you can get really goofy up there. You spend three months building and you don’t want to see it turn to fire to balls of sticks. We got him to starting the hobby, how about 8 or 9 years ago. He flew so nice but he’s such a builder. He builds, I fly. He used to fly so well and now his talents are just the joy of saying, I mean his planes you can let go of the stick and the plane will just fly straight. It’s just the quality of buildmanship, his attention of detail. I don’t have the patience for it. I’ll put some in the air and no problem but just sit there and build something like that he had the talent and the patience. You’ll see some people will come out here with some equipment that you just dream of having someday like any hobby. But the people that come out from this it’s up here to your farmer or a CEO over at Dell Fly. Well the same out here, we have a look and we trying to fly something that we built and see if it works.
