Newark Mayor Cory Booker was treated at a hospital last night after he rushed into his neighbor’s burning home and helped pull two people to safety -- and he lived to Tweet about it.
WABC was live at the scene Thursday Night.
“The mayor, who had a TV appearance Thursday evening arrived to find the house ablaze. The security detail had already arrived and helped three people escape, but when the mayor heard a fourth person inside stuck on the second floor, a woman, he ran into help her, rescue her, carry her out...”
After the incident, Mr. Booker sat down with CBS News Friday morning . He tells the morning anchors the situation was a “come to Jesus” moment.
“... when I jumped through the kitchen which was all in flames, I actually wasn’t thinking. But then when I got there and couldn’t find her in all the smoke... that’s when I had really clear thoughts that I’m not going to get out of this place alive.”
The Newark Mayor was able to find and rescue the woman trapped inside. He carried her until he met the rest of his team outside and collapsed on the ground. Mr. Booker and the woman were both taken to the hospital.
The Star Ledger reports the woman suffered second degree burns on her back, while the mayor suffered smoke inhalation and second degree burns on his right hand.
Even under close watch at the hospital, Mr. Booker still had at least one thumb to tweet his experience to his more than one million followers...
“Thanks 2 all who are concerned ... We got the woman out of the house. We are both off to hospital. I will b ok.”
Keep in mind, Mr. Booker is Newark’s one -- and only mayor. Also at the scene was the mayor’s security, Detective Rodriguez, who was hesitant to let Mr. Booker brave the burning building. He told CBS ...
RODRIGUEZ: “… basically he told me this woman is going to die if we don’t help her. What do you say to that? So I let him go and without thinking twice he just ran into the flames...”
Before fighting fires, Mr. Booker was better known in Newark for helping to shovel out his neighbors during an intense snowstorm last year?
