Outward Bound in Hong Kong Male: Today Vinnie and Matt are taking an inward journey by participating in an outward bound adventure. They begin in a Zodiac Raft that will take them to the island of Sai Kung where outward bound or challenge awaits. As they proceed onward to the Sea Caves between Hong Kong’s outer island. The clear water prompts the two friends to reflect on more profound reasons for their trip. Vinnie Alvarez: I really, really enjoy life and I’m not going to let fears necessarily hold me back or its kind of that attitude that if you were sick and that didn’t kill you then why not you know throw caution at the wind. Male: At Outward Bound, high challenge experiences are designed to stimulate personal growth. Erik Vilkinson: Welcome to Outward Bound Golf course. We just had this facility about a year. It’s really exciting, high challenge facility. Its very, very safe however, our hope is that when you get up there you feel like you’re confronting fear, you’re confronting risk in a very real way. Male Vinnie and Matt will climb a 40-foot pole and then jump off to try to make contact with the swinging red ball. Erik Vilkinson: Working with fear is something we all have to do at some point and hopefully there will be some transfer as between your experience here and another experience somewhere else of the unknown. Matt: From the start, honestly I think I'm scared of height. That your legs are shaking so that makes everything worst so when he said stretch your back out and honestly its kind of a weird thing. You feel like you have to calm yourself down or just makes it worst. Male: Now its Vinnie’s turn. Vinnie Alvarez: I don’t know if I was going to make it easier for me, its not. Erik Vilkinson: Well you know our hope and rationale for doing this will so you can develop a little bit of relationship with fear and stress and maybe able to recognize and work with it a little bit. Matt: Just watch the red ball. Vinnie Alvarez: And then it started to shake and I thought at one point that I was going to just pass out, fall out the thing before you had a chance to you know set everything up and then the idea of trying to prepare my – it was quite nerve rocking. Male: For Vinnie, the victory over fear is worth repeating.
