Audra: She captivated the hearts of America winning the only U.S. Gold medal
during the 1968 Olympic Winter Games and today Peggy Flemming is
stealing our hearts once again. She’s here on better telling us what it’s like
to truly win at life. How you doing Peggy?
Peggy: I’m doing great.
Audra: Good, we’re going to explain all that because you literally did win at life
when it comes to facing a lot of obstacles you know starting at the age of
11 you had only had been skating for two years in your entire— the U.S.
Olympic Skating team died in the plane crash including your coach right?
Peggy: Right and they were on their way to the world championships and that was
really devastating for me. I lost my coach but it was a real loss for skating
because it wasn’t only our world class skaters it was all of our top coaches
in the country so it took us a awhile to come back in the forefronts.
Audra: At that age too, that’s a young age, did it propel you to go further with
your career.
Peggy: You know I didn’t have the perspective back then I just continued on the
sport and just loved it and it has been a great experience and you know I
just learned so many lessons that I still tap into today.
Audra: Right we were inducted into the US Olympic Hall of fame and now when
we see the skaters today not only with the routines that they have to
perform and just how things have changed. How does that compare to
when you were doing your thing?
Peggy: Well it has gotten more creative, more technically difficult but it’s basic
competition it’s still the same and I think we’re the most sought after
ticket at the Olympic Games because we’re not only a sport, we’re. It’s
artistry as well and you can sit in you can sit in your comfortable seat and
watch the games and.
Audra: You still watch just as much as you did then.
Peggy: Oh no not as much but I was just at the Olympic trials in Spokane so I’m
really excited about the Olympics starting and I’m excited to be there and
I’m going to be working with All State and they are showcasing their
support of our US Olympic Team by putting an art exhibit special art
exhibit.
Audra: Tribute right.
Peggy: Yes and it’s a Hall of Fame Tribute and they are bringing to life the
images of the Olympic Winter Olympians that have been inducted into the
US Olympic Hall of Fame presented by All State and these images are
going to be life sized 3D images of these Winter Olympians.
Audra: Speaking of inspiring a little over 10 years ago you were diagnosed with
breast cancer right.
Peggy: Right.
Audra: How are things going now? What’s going on with the…
Peggy: I’m doing fine. I don’t miss my check ups and I still promote early
detection and I think that goes for you know any part of a health and I
think just participating and just checking off the list of check ups and
things that you have to do and stay active, exercise, eat right. I think
everybody knows the drill but it’s basically up to you to take charge of
your health.
Audra: You did a great job thank you so much.
Peggy: To motivate people and get out there moving I think this is a great time
with the Olympics coming around to think about you know taking care of
your health because this is what a healthy body can do, you know.
Audra: Exactly take a look at her. Well thank you so much Peggy it’s good to
have you here and if you guys want to get more information on the
