Hi and welcome to Bod Beat. I'm Dr. Loretta. Last week I talked about some of the amazing foods that can boost your immune system, lower your risk of catastrophic illness and strengthen your heart. This week we’re going to talk about fruits and vegetables. One, berries and cherries. This colorful fruit contains chemicals that act as antioxidants. I believe my scientist to protect the body from the stresses of age or possibly reduce the risk of cancer.
Blueberries, strawberries, cranberries and blackberries. Cherries, both sweet and tart are particular reach in Anthocyanins. Micronutrients that may help jumpstart the immune system and map up diseases cause by free radicals. Other research suggests they may also reduce the inflammation associated with arthritis and gout.
Two, spinach, this dark leafy green vegetable is packed with vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin A, fiber and some calcium and iron. These nutrients are potent antioxidants that fight cancer and also boost the immune system. Spinach is also very low calorie. If you have kidney stones, spinach can form calcium oxalates avoid eating spinach.
Three, sweet potatoes, too bad many of us only eat this in the holidays like Thanksgiving. Sweet potatoes are among the most nutritious of vegetables since they are packed with decease fighting beta-carotene, fiber and other antioxidants. They are a starch so when you eat them they break down easily and you’re left with pure glucose. The up shot is it raises blood sugar quickly when eating without fats or fibers.
Four, celery, this traditional diet staple is a great source of potassium. A nutrient that helps reduced blood pressure and regulates the balance of fluids and minerals in the body. Most Americans get less than 50% of the suggestive 4700 milligrams a day. People usually use bananas as a go two source of potassium but four medium stalks of celery deliver about the same amount of potassium as 105 calorie banana from your 24 calories.
The crunchy coated taste also contains compounds called Phthalides which moderate blood pressure too. Five, mushrooms, they are low in calorie and are the top of the plant source for B complex vitamins including riboflavin which help keep skin healthy and your eyesight sharp. They also leave other fructose in the dusk when it comes to selenium, an antioxidant that may protect against some cancers. Researchers in the Netherlands recently reported that the metabolites release from mushrooms during digestion have been shown to boost the immune system and prevent cancer growth.
And according to a study from researchers at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign, mushrooms contain two types of fiber that absorb fat and whisk it out of the blood lowering your risk for heart decease. All mushrooms offer benefits but the big winner is the mini portabella. It’s high in selenium and potassium and just remember moderation even with good foods is key. Keep your calorie and take reasonable and watch the salt unsaturated fat and you’ll most likely be shocked with the results in the short order.
