Bob Schmidt shows you a feature you will want to have in a new power tool . when buying tools for home maintenance and home remodeling projects

Hi! I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. Not unlike step ladders, which changed over the years, you get lighter materials. Stronger materials, stronger design, more features power tools are no different. They come out with new features every day. They’re on a race to beat each other so that to get your business. Before purchasing your next power tool, I’ll show you some of the features you need to look out for which will help your power tool last longer, and it’ll make it much easier to use. Let’s get to work. Three basic tools that I’m going to talk about today are the drill, the jigsaw, and the power saw. Something that all three of these have in common is each one of them have a cutting blade of some sort on them. Keeping these blades sharp will cause less stress on the motor of each one this pieces of equipment, and make them last a lot longer. One of the most important features you can look for when you’re buying a power tool is how easy it is to change one blade to the next new blade, or the sharp blade. Now when buying a drill, there are self-locking bits, and there are keyless chocks. Every drill that I would buy would always have a keyless chock. Whether it’s a corded drill like this one, or whether it’s a battery operated drill. That way, if this blade on the tip of this bit gets dull, or you need to change sizes or tools, simply reverse it, grab the end put a little pressure on it, put it back and forward, and you have your new bit. This will keep you from having to have several drills to have several different accessories in it. You can change them quickly from one to the other. This jigsaw is also a no-tools-required for changing blade. You simply pull this up on the top, turn it a few turns to the left, out comes the old blade, in with the new, new sharp blade, few turns to your right, you’re ready to get back to work just that quick. Particularly on power saw blades, a dull blade will make for bad work. Not straight lines and it’ll put a lot of stress on your motor to the point where you have smoke filling the room. With this feature, all you do is get it in a locking position, slide this little dude out, turn it to the left, get it loose, turn the rest of it out by hand, out with the old blade, simply return it back in, catch washer back on, turn it until it’s tight, and you’re ready to resume work. If you’re a new homeowner, purchasing your first power tools, always keep in mind you get what you pay for. Buy yourself a high quality power tool, with some of the latest features and it’ll probably good for you for the life of your remodeling projects on your house. If you’re a remodeler, we always keep up to date on things like this because we change out tools far more frequently. I guarantee you the next toll I own, power saw will have this feature on it, even if it means buying a porter cable because this means a lot to me. One more safety note. Whenever changing blades on any type of power saws of jigsaws, make sure you unplug the cord, even with the self locking mechanism. That doesn’t guarantee that you can’t accidentally hit the trigger and lose a finger. Maybe with the exception of the cordless drill where you need the power to change the bit itself.
