Lorraine McKiniry: There are few names more synonymous with luxury and pampering than Ritz-Carlton. Look at this; you get to look at this every day. Saphie Reid: Yeah, I’m very privilege to work here. Lorraine McKiniry: I should tell you I’m jealous. So pretty. So what makes your spa treatments a little different here in Jamaica? Saphie Reid: We try to use products that are unique to our culture. We blend that in quite a bit, so most of our treatments that we provide take some aspect of our culture into consideration. We have wonderful therapist. So most or all of our guests do come in for a treatment. So that by far is always everything else. Lorraine McKiniry: So I’m really excited because today, I get to experience firsthand one your spa treatments, which of the treatment will I be doing? Saphie Reid: Well today, we’ll be demonstrating the sugarcane body scrub. It’s actually one of our signature treatments and one of our most frequently requested service. It’s actually made from white sand mixed with sugarcane. Lorraine McKiniry: Why sugarcane? Saphie Reid: Sugarcane—actually the hotel was once a sugarcane plantation. Most of these areas were sugarcane plantation, so sugarcane is a big thing in Jamaica. As I mentioned before we always try to pull something from our culture. Female: Here we have the crushed oyster shell with the white sand and the sugar cream and we’re going to combine that with our honey, aloe and milk. So I’m just going to place it in our little bowl here and we have honey, the aloe and the milk you can just feel it. Lorraine McKiniry: Oh that smells good enough to eat. Female: Yeah. So we’re going to combine that. In Jamaica whenever our children they are sick and have colds we use honey with a little lime and that will help them. We have the mango-papaya and the wild jam right here and naturally that’s a dessert in Jamaica that we eat. Lorraine McKiniry: These are all organic material as well? Female: Yes, it is. When we combine that we got a foaming action. Lorraine McKiniry: Oh my goodness I can do this? Female: Yes you can. Lorraine McKiniry: It’s starting to foam right up. It’s turning into a mushy texture. Female: Yes, and we usually see a cornmeal look when you have that, you know, porridge. Lorraine McKiniry: Uh-huh a little bit like that I know what you mean. Female: We’ll start with a loofah, which naturally grown here in Jamaica. The loofah helps to exfoliate the skin to get rid of the dead cell. After which we apply the mixture which has honey-aloe-milk, as well as crushed oyster shell, sugar and sand. It’s going to exfoliate you, detoxify you. It’s going to increase blood circulation. When blood circulation is increased oxygen is increased which brings energy in the body. It also takes away carbon dioxide and toxins. After which you’re going to the hydrotherapy bath for about 5 minutes. Back on the bed we will do a half an hour massage. So you’re moisturized with honey spice and that’s made from wild young papaya and mango. Your treatment today is going to be relaxing. Your body will feel polished and renewed.
