Sasha Fierce Look

Ford Artists' Johnny Lavoy creates a look inspired by Beyonce's alter ego, Sasha Fierce!

Hi! I am Johnny Lavoy and I am hair stylist with Ford Artists. The look I want to create for you or show you how to do today is Sasha Fierce, Beyoncé's alter ego. It's a look that's sort of concentrating, sort of has that Mohawk feeling, has a lot of volume on top is looks like, and I am going to show you how to get there today. I am here with Nick, and today she is going to be my Sasha Fierce. We blew Nick's hair out earlier but now I want to take some of that volume out of it, and just go over with a flat iron to get it super straight and I am just going to take big sections, smooth the hair out. Even if your hair is straight, by flat ironing your hair it's just going to take out any of that extra volume and give the hair that really sleek look that we are going for. And I am concentrating on flat ironing the ends of the hair more than getting in at the root, because I do want a little fullness at the root, because if you have seen Beyoncé's new look for this Sasha Fierce album that she has out now, it has a lot of volume on the top. So, we are going to work with that versus having to take all the body out and then put it right back in and at the end. Flat ironing the hair is also going to give the hair a lot more shine as well. Okay, so now you see, her hair is nice and sleek. I want to create some volume on the top, so I am going to spray in a little volumizing spray at the top and then I am going and flat iron it, but I am going to put a little bend in it, so that she has some height. So, when you flat iron the root with the volumizing spray. I am bending it at the root, just so she gets a little bit of that volume in there. And that's going to help me when I am creating Mohawk look on top. So, after that's done, you can see that she already has a little bit of volume on top but we want to take it one step further. So what I am going to do is to go in and tease that section that I just flat ironed. One of the common comments I see on the boards and like I said I do read them, is that people are concerned about teasing, breaking their hair. And teasing is alright as long as it's not done excessively and if it's done correctly. By doing it correctly, you just take a small rattail comb, so you go in and you just put the comb in at the top and drag it down and you sort of pack some of the hair at the root, because that's where you are going to get your volume. So, after I have done that, I am going to go in and just spray that at the root, where we put our tease, just for a little extra hold, and then I am going to leave that alone for now. So the next thing I am going to do is just clip this tease section off and I am going to section the hair right in front of the ear. And I am going to take this section here and bring it back. And then after I take it back, I am just going to secure it with the big bobby pin, and then you want to secure that with some hairspray. Repeat that process on the other side, and then I just want to secure any short hair. Once that's done, now we are going to finish off the top, and we already have our spray in there and our tease, so then you want to just smooth off the top a little bit, being careful not to brush out all the tease that you've put in, a little spray, little extra hold. And you are going to use the top piece to cover up the section in the back as well, so that's going to hide our pins. And after it's sprayed, you can go in with your rattail and add a little more height if you want. And this is the look we are calling Sasha Fierce.
