Singer VV Brown Interview
Mina: As a young black songstress. VV Brown is bombarded with expectations of how to portray her image. Hi, I’m Mina and welcome to watchmojo.com. And today we’re speaking with VV Brown.
What do you consider some important characteristics of a female songstress?
VV Brown: It’s really difficult to describe or say what the characteristics are because everyone is different. But I guess if I had to it would be someone who has a strong sense of identity, isn’t afraid to be different and is trying to push boundaries and make a difference, doesn’t have to sell themselves sexually to be deemed a credible musician, a strong—I think that’s what make it a strong in music.
Mina: What do you consider are some of today’s most influential woman in the world of music?
VV Brown: Of course Lady Gaga. She’s kind of made acceptable in America to be fashion conscious as an artist. In Europe we’ve been doing this forever. We have Grace Jones and Rose Murphy it’s no more for us to dress extravagantly. In America I guess she’s made it more acceptable to be fashionable and a musician.
Mina: I've heard you describe yourself as a control freak. How do you think someone needs to be in order to be successful in the music industry?
VV Brown: I think most artists are successful, are very clued up on the things that they need to represent themselves as an artist in everything they do. And I had really bad time when I was signed before where I didn’t what was going on I was this young girl kind of like a puppet. So this time around everything I want to know about what’s going on, what radio station, what television station everything I need to know because I’m the only one who can really truly understand how I can be represented properly because it’s me, it’s my identities, it’s my music.
Mina: As a young female black R&B artist, are there any expectations you find people as to how you portray your image?
VV Brown: Well, I wouldn’t call myself an R&B artist it’s more than R&B. But I think as far as being a black artist doing alternative music I’m just trying to not conform to stereotype. When people see a total black girl with long head I immediately assumed that I’m doing like R&B music with beauty shorts and it’s kind of like Beyonce or something. And I love Beyonce she does it well but just because I’m totally black it doesn’t mean I have to do that. So I guess I’m just trying to do something different and like stereotypes. We all naturally judge people when you first see them, everyone does it but if I’m just trying to be positive and good hopefully I can contribute to be stereotypes, being breaking down and people just seeing people for human being rather than she must be like this because she is.
