Ivy Hartman: Welcome to SBTV.com’s coverage of the 2007 NAWBO conference at Atlanta, Georgia. I am Ivy Hartman and with me is Karyn Pettigrew of KP Consulting out of Chicago, Illinois.
Karyn Pettigrew: Yeah.
Ivy Hartman: And talk about KP Consulting and what kind of consulting firm you do.
Karyn Pettigrew: Yeah our firm is responsible for providing guidance to people to succeed at their dreams. We do that by unearthing those pinning obstacles, the things they may not be aware are limiting or preventing them from accomplishing what they want.
Ivy Hartman: Give me some examples of some of your clients and what you might have been unearth so that we can have a better idea.
Karyn Pettigrew: Oh yes, sure. I work with a variety of clients. I’ve worked with a theatrical company whose creative director was having a hard time communicating with his team, his staff or, hard time, kind of conceptualizing his vision. I work with him on two or three sessions and what we we’re able to do was to pull out what was really important to him was less administration and actually more of the art. He found himself spending more time at the organization group, doing lots of administrative thing. He was a creative genius. He needed to be in his art so that’s just one example of spending time with someone to really pull out what was true.
Ivy Hartman: Well talk about some of your personal experiences or experience you have that you drawn in order to serve your clients.
Karyn Pettigrew: Oh gee, yes. Spend 15 years in the corporate marketing side and marketing strategy. I’ve studied with a number of intuitive practitioners and what I do is I blend the two hemispheres so when I sit down with someone, I’m pulling on both sides of the business. I pull on all my historical business background but then I con all of these intuitive background and training and experience and I also guide people to trust and use their own intuition.
Ivy Hartman: That’s interesting that you talk about intuition because I think that many people may not be in touch with intuition and you find that, that your intuitive approach, either appeals to stop more people or scare some.
Karyn Pettigrew: Yeah I think a lot of people are scared by it conceptually but what they don’t understand is how they are using it everyday, anyway. My job is to help them recognize that and heighten their use; really sharpen their use of that skill. So we blend those two things in any one session or in a consulting situation.
Ivy Hartman: I can say that, actually comforting.
Karyn Pettigrew: Yeah.
Ivy Hartman: And I know that this is your first conference.
Karyn Pettigrew: Right.
Ivy Hartman: The National Conference but you’ve been a NAWBO member for five years.
Karyn Pettigrew: Right.
Ivy Hartman: And now you are a board member in the Chicago area.
Karyn Pettigrew: Right. I’m working as their substitute planning director.
Ivy Hartman: Oh, the how appropriate.
Karyn Pettigrew: It’s really fun.
Ivy Hartman: So what lies in the future of that?
Karyn Pettigrew: You know what, Chicago is a fabulous chapter where one of the largest chapters you have enormous enthusiasm and passion and lots of women in a large city and we just want to lift and hold the examples and principles of NAWBO and help the other chapters in any way that we can but like leading the way, staying on the edge.
Ivy Hartman: Okay. Speaking of Chicago, do you do your consulting and work with clients outside of the Chicago area?
Karyn Pettigrew: I do, I work all over, in fact globally. So it has been fabulous and really fun.
Ivy Hartman: Have you always been global or is that something that you.
Karyn Pettigrew: Something new and in fact, we’ve, I’ve met a couple of people here from Africa and from China who I’ll be in touch with. NAWBO has been fabulous at building those connections.
Ivy Hartman: And what do you think, is there, well how do you think small businesses can benefit from your type of consulting.
Karyn Pettigrew: I like to say that you don’t know what you don’t know and sometimes that’s why we help people unearth the hidden limitations so just having a session and initial consultation to just see where you are fit. In fact, you’re actions aren’t in line with your intentions, what your goals are. I listen deeply. I identify those places where there are inconsistencies of what you’re trying to do and we pull out those things so that you can slow and flourish in your business.
Ivy Hartman: Well you must have had a sense to attend this conference and it sounds like it’s been great for you. Thank you Karyn for joining us.
