Sony's prototype compact camera with an interchangeable lens, the unreleased Alpha-series model that was first shown last month at California's PMA show, was presented in Japan on Thursday but the company still isn't disclosing much about the device. The camera is aimed at people who want a little more creativity than a fixed-lens compact camera allows but who don't want to carry a larger and bulkier digital SLR camera.

The camera is aimed people who want a little more creativity than fixed lens compact cameras can allow but who don’t want to carry around a larger and bulkier digital SLR camera. Masashi Imamura: The concept of this camera is to give the customer a lot of opportunity to use a different type of lenses because it used to be the compact SLR camera just using only lens which is equipped inside the camera. If there is a possibility to adopt that all of we know and interchangeable lenses there are many opportunity for customers to get a variety of the pictures. That’s what I want to do. Martyn Williams: Competitors including Panasonic have had such products on sale for almost a year and this week announce new models but Sony is claiming technical superiority and says a larger image sensor in each camera will result in better pictures. There are few of the details available right now. Sony hasn’t announce the price and what the most specific on a launch date beyond saying sometime this year. Another future product from Sony will be a 3D camera. Masashi Imamura: I cannot tell the detail about it but sure that we are now developing the 3D type of our product. Martyn Williams: Sony is pushing 3D hard and this week it unveils its first 3D TVs. They plan 3D compatible laptops and PlayStation games so a camera would provide users a way to capture their own footage.
