Male: So you cook around Tung Choi Street? Guide: Yes. This is the Mong Kok area. We call it the Tung Choi Street. So maybe you can see there is a lot of shops selling the goldfish that are good for aquarium. Male: Pretty much every stores are goldfish sellers. Guide: Yes, because Tung Choi is the same area, so the price is quite interesting. As you can see right next to us, a lot of people come and hang around to see before they buy it. But also, you can smell, it smells like fish and so. Because here is a local area nearby some school. When the students would start coming around from school around 4pm, they’re hungry. They would come to buy some Chinese cheese, like tofu. Male: So it’s fermented tofu, right? Guide: Fermented tofu. Male: And then deep fried? Guide: And then deep fried, but it’s tasty. But when you smell it… Male: Do you eat it? Guide: Do you want to try? Male: Yeah. We should actually give it a shot. Guide: He doesn’t want us to take pictures of the tofu that’s not yet deep fried. Because if you’ll see the tofu not deep fried yet, it will scare people. So, he would like to show you when the tofu is done already. Male: Okay. Guide: So that you won’t have bad images. Male: I mean, it doesn’t smell bad already. Guide: Yes. When you have it deep fried and then when you smell, the smell comes out. This is the deep fried tofu that fermented. Male: So this is the fermented tofu? Guide: That’s. What many people do is add some sauce, spicy sauce, and then they will use the bamboo like a chopstick, and then bon apetit. Male: And the spicy sauce makes it taste better? Guide: Yes, because if you have it deep fried, sometimes, it’s too hot. You can add some soy sauce or some spicy sauce and then you may taste, but it’s much hotter. This is spicy and this is sweet sauce. I think you can use the sweet sauce. This one is better I think. Just try one piece. It’s hot. Male: It’s still hot from the deep frying? Guide: It’s very hot. It has just been brought from the kitchen. Male: I got to tell you this, this doesn’t smell as bad as I’ve smelled in the past. Guide: Yes because they had ventilators. The smell is already up in the sky. Male: This smells as bad as the petrified shark that I had a couple of weeks ago in Iceland. Guide: Don’t think about the smell. Just think about the taste. Male: Just think about the taste, okay. Initially, it’s pretty bad. Guide: The sauce? Male: No, the tofu. But you know, chug it down, it’s not so bad. Guide: How do you feel in your mouth? Male: I don’t think I’ll have it again. I don’t think it will happen again. I think I’ll give a pass on this stinky tofu.
