GOLFALOT.COM Equipment News Male: Hello and welcome to a TaylorMade R9 Edition of Golf A Lot Equipment News where we preview the new R9 Woods and the new Rescue 2009 Hybrid. The R9 driver is TaylorMade’s most advance driver to date and builds on the technology and innovation that made the R7 driver so popular. The R9 driver is the first TaylorMade driver to use flight control technology to allow golfers to change the face angle lie and loft of the club. As Nick Faldo now explains this is done using a simple wrench to change the shaft. Nick: FCT starts with a small bolt in the bottom of the club head loosen the bolt with Y R9 wrench that comes with the club. Don’t worry about losing the bolt because it doesn’t come out completely. Pull the shaft out of their head and you’ll see a sleeve on the tip. The outside of the sleeve is marked with 8 positions according to the type of shot you want to hit. There are 4 main settings. L+ for maximum draw, R+ for a controlled fade and neutral upright for a slight draw and neutral for a slight fade. In addition you get 4 additional settings to promote formal trajectories. One of the great things about FCT is that you can adjust to face angle to make the club look the way you want it address. Player’s who find a slice like to see the close face where players prone to hooks prefer a square or slightly open face. FCT allows you to set the face up the way you like it. Find the one you want and line it up with the mark on the front of the hurdle as you insert the shaft back into the head. Next take the wrench and tie it in the FCT bolt until the wrench makes a loud click. Like that it’s that easy. Male: The R9 also has the movable weight technology which was first introduced in the R7 driver. Nick: Movable weight technology (MWT) allows you to change the club head central gravity by moving different weighted MWT cartridges into different places. The R9 driver comes with a 16 grand cartridge and 21 grand cartridges to promote a right to left shot put a heavy cartridge in the heel port to promote a left to right shot put the heavy cartridge in the toe port and to promote a straight shot put the heavy cartridge in the back port. You can use the Y R9 wrench to install and remove the MWT cartridges. Male: The R9 club head reaches the maximum 420 cc limit and post on drivers with movable weight. For the size and power of the club it’s just the start of the story. Nick: What makes the R9 driver totally adjustable compared to other drivers is that FCT and MWT work together to give you more inference over your shots and when you combine the 8 FCT settings with the 3 MWT cartridge configurations you get a total of 24 trajectories so that’s like getting 24 drivers in 1. Male: You are very impressed with the R9 driver especially by how simply the changes can be made by loosening a screw on the sole of the club and swiveling the club heads. The club looks great at address with a slightly more triangular shape than the previous R7 model. The feel of impact was very good. Better players will enjoy the workability that the R9 offers while those less confident of the tee were certainly impressed by the distance, consistency and forgiveness for these excellent club deliveries. The different settings certainly have an impact on the shape of your shots and the flights of the bulb. Using the flight control technology to rotate the shaft seem to have a greater influence on shots than moving the weights around which is not surprising as this simultaneously changes the moments of inertia loft and lie of the club. If you are trying to find the setting that best suites your game then we would recommend using the FCT to adjust the shaft and then fine tune the flight with the MWT movable weights. Better golfers will probably find a setting that suites them best and stick with that but the real board is for improving players who can just adjust the performance of their driver as their game improves without having to buy a new club. The R9 driver also comes in a TP version which includes the stiffer and slightly heavier Fujikura Motori F1 Graphite shaft. Nick: The driver like the R9 deserves a special shaft which is why it comes quick to the new Fujikura Motori with high Inertia tip technology known as Hit. Hit technology gives the Motori an advance internal design structure that allows the shaft to store more energy during the downswing. Male: The TP version will probably set you back an extra 50 pounds but we would certainly recommend you consider stretching your budget as the shaft is worth the extra investment. For the first time in the Fairway Wood, the TaylorMade R9 Fairway Wood also features flight control technology to change the angle, loft and lie of the club face. We were very impressed that the R9 Fairway Wood combined this innovation with a classic loops of a more traditional club as with the R9 driver adjusting the club is very quick and you can really notice the changes to the shape of your shots as you rub them through the different settings. The R9 Fairway is a better players club and the head also features a more triangular shape than the R7. The performance was very good with a strong flight and you could choose from 4 different lofts from 13 to 19 degrees. Like the R9 drivers the fairway woods are available in a TP version that comes equip with a Fujikura Motore F1 shaft for an extra 50 pounds or so. Finally the Taylor Made Rescue 2009 builds on the original Rescue mid club. The Rescue 2009 features a compact club head and a redesigned sole to make plain shots from both a Fairway and Rough much easier while the center of gravity has been lured to increase both forgiveness and workability. As fans of the original Rescue mid we were certainly keen to try the rescue 2009 and didn’t disappoint. The face of the club has been squared off slightly and the silver top line has been replaced with an old black finish which we think is a good move. In our test it was very forgiving on mis hits but also delivering excellent distance and a strong trajectory that did not build in too much. The Rescue 2009 is also available in TP version. That includes the excellent Aldilla Voodoo Shaft with the adjustable flight control technology and again are their own 30 pounds extra we would certainly consider the rest of the TP to be the best option, well that’s all for now so for more information on the TaylorMade R9 Range and to compare prices from every major retailer just go to our website at golfalot.com.
