Connie from Wyoming says her 16-year-old daughter has been taking birth control pills for over two years. She is worried that being young and taking the pill may affect her daughter's chances of becoming pregnant when she's ready. OB/GYN Dr. Lisa weighs in.

If your 16-year-old is sexually active and she's doing it for contraception, this is very good for her because the risk of pregnancy for a teenager, the health risk of that are very high. So it's much better for her to be on a very good contraception, but again mind her to use condoms, because she can still get sexually transmitted diseases from intercourse as well, and that can affect fertility. So as long as she is using condoms, so that she won't get STDs, that would decrease her fertility in the future, then she don't have to worry about the birth control pills. Birth control pills get out of a person system very quickly, that's why we have girls do 2 and 3 pills as a backup, if they miss a pill, and if they miss too many, then we have them use backup methods for them on. There is also a lot of health benefits from birth control pills too, they decrease ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, anemia, your risk of rheumatoid arthritis, there is all kinds of health benefits to birth control pills too. So they do not affect long-term fertility, in short, but remember, the condoms to decrease the risk of getting STDs, which can decrease fertility.
