The Answer Band Members Talk About Touring with AC/DC

Description

Irish rockers The Answer tell WatchMojo what it's like to open for rock royalty like AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and The Who.

Transcript
Host: They’ve played huge venues as openers for such rock veterans as AC/Dc, The Rolling Stones and The Who. Today we’re speaking with Irish rockers The Answer to learn more about the pressures of playing with rock royalty. Micky Waters: This is the club we’re playing later on in the background. Host: Yeah it’s only 60,000 people, like whatever. Cormack Neeson: 60,000 of our closest friends. Host: Now, you guys have toured with rock royalty such as AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, The Who, what have you learned from these bands? Micky Waters: You can tell they believe exactly what they're doing and you can tell why they've lasted so long. They go up there and they believe in every note. They know how to perform and get an audience going. Stand up using—avoid eye contact with audience. Cormack Neeson: Angus Young, Pete Townsend, Mick Jagger, The Charisma, those guys still have it on stage and they love what they have for what they're doing and I think as long as you’ve started in music, you can keep going forever but if you're not, give it up and learn the banjo or something. Host: Is opening for AC/DC a daunting spot to fill because I think I've heard kind of some horror stories about the opening bands. Cormack Neeson: A couple of days before we headed off to New York, a man told us stories like Buddy Gay getting bottled off in Germany and different audiences that span the entire gate holding their concert tickets in the air as a sign that they want the support band to get off the stage. We stepped up on stage and we were pretty nervous. In fact before the show, Brian Johnson would come out and say advice. “Don’t you worry. I am as nervous as you are. Just get up and do your thing.” So that’s what we did. We got up and we realized people are not going to be so—here. We’re playing a kind of music that the AC/DC audience can really get their teeth into. That’s been unbelievable, you know you walk off the stage feeling like—with your own crowd of 70,000 people, you’ve just played in front of you know, crowd surfing and people getting trailed out of the audience. I think we've been quite lucky. Touch wood. Micky Waters: So far so good.
