Let's start this volume of Fast Lane Tennis with an amazing statistic to emphasize the importance of the serve. Be sure to sit down if you are standing and listen carefully. In a recent Junior Tournament, I read a bunch of numbers and determined that the average set consists of 55 points. Nothing new there. And the average point last three hits including the serve, nothing new there. But what percentage of all shots hit by each player was their own serve? Catch this, a whopping 45%, yes 45%. Now, that includes both first serves missed and the subsequent second serves. No question about it, the serve is the most prominent shot in tennis and what percentage were return of serves? 34%. Yes the return of serve is the second most common hit shot in the game. More on that shot in volume seven of this series. Now that we are clear on the importance of the serve, the question is when should a new player learn how to hit it. The first time to play, the second, after a month, how about right after that? It can be a simplified approach but get at it right away.
