Outside of Sterling, there are even more old relics to visit. It went to see Dune Castle. It’s just up the road from Sterling. It’s mainly a hulking stone shell now but it has a long story to tell. It began as a 14th century enclosed fortress complete with two monstrous towers. Dune Castle is named for dun meaning fortified town, which stood nearby. The castle was built as a hunting lodge taken over by King James I. The crown controlled the castle for years. In 1570, it was held for the exiled Mary Queen of Scots. It was taken and retaken several times over the centuries. Do you recognize Dune Castle? It may best be known as the castle in the 1974 film, Monte Python and the Holy Grail. Hundreds of fans come to visit every year and the day I was here, scores of people were flocking in for a wedding. To end this journey, I’ve come to the southwestern coast to the Firth of Clyde and the tony town of Eire, a beachfront community apparently rolling in cash. There are fine homes near the beach and further inland. This was a retreat from the urban sprawl of Glasgow some 40 miles or 64 kilometers to the north. People came here to rest, relax, attend the horse races. They still do.
