Twitter Passes 10 billion Tweets
Mark Licea: ABC makes good on its promise to Cablevision, gamers can declare their orientation on Xbox Live and proof that everyone and their mother is one Twitter.
It’s Monday, March 8th. I'm Mark Licea and it's time to Get Loaded.
If you’re a Cablevision subscriber, you know that ABC pulled their content from the service on one of the most in opportune days of the year “The Night of the Oscars.” The problem of course involves money. ABC says, Cablevision charges customers for access to the ABC Network but instead, Cablevision pays ABC’s parent company Disney $200 million a year.
ABC said earlier in the month that it wanted an additional $40 million or else it would pull its content from Cablevision by March 7th. The company made good on that promise and Cablevision owners were none too please with the timing. ABC really use the Oscars to leverage their case but the company has reached a last minute deal at 8:44 P.M. Eastern Time but that was too late for many customers who had already made alternate viewing plans.
Speaking of “The Oscars,” if the number of illegal downloads constituted earning the price movie award, who would win? TorrentFreak calculated which of the Oscar nominees for best picture had been torrented the most. The site found that District 9 was at the top with over 12.5 million downloads. Avatar came in second with 11 million downloads and number three with almost 8 million was The Hurt Locker. It’s not my intention to glorify piracy by reporting on the story. You should pay for your movies.
Last week, YouTube opened automated captioning to the public before Thursday. Auto captioning was still in Beta. The service is designed to help the hearing impaired and right now, the feature works with videos in English. YouTube says non English speaking videos will eventually be added and videos with too much background noise or bad sound won’t get captions. The auto caption feature pairs a special technology with Google Speech Recognition. This could help Google monetize their videos better by using the caption feature to add and target their viewers.
Gamers on Xbox Live can now be fourth coming with their sexual orientation. Microsoft announced the change to its code of conduct that let’s players adjust their profile to describe themselves as gay, straight, by lesbian and transgender. Previously, Microsoft banned accounts with the word gay in it and the company said they feared gamers would use these words in a derogatory way. Now that the information is open, hopefully, gamers can be mature enough to keep dumb remarks about other players to themselves.
Speaking of Microsoft, the company announced the release of Office 2010. The software will go on sale to businesses on May 12th and consumers will be able to get hold of a copy some time in June. If you purchased Office 2007 between March 5th and September 30th of this year, the company has agreed to give those consumers a free upgrade to the latest version. Office 2007 and Office Home and Student 2007 will also get a free copy of the software for upgrade. If you want to try out the Beta, visit Office2010.Microsoft.com
If you’re an Apple fanboy excited to tether your iPod to the iPhone when it comes out, no luck. 9to5Mac.com is reporting that Steve Jobs responded to a question about tethering the WiFi only version of the iPod to an iPhone. His response yielded no jargon, no excuses, just a simple one word answer of ‘No.’ There you have it. We can all appreciate an answer that is straight to the point.
If being cool means you know about technology sites that others don’t, you probably should’ve crossed Twitter off your list a long time ago. The site has reached its 10 Billionth twit. No word on who the twitter was or what he twitted but do we really care? The site reached its 1 Billion twit in November of 2008. So, to summarize, everyone and their moms uses twitter.
Those were your headlines for today. Thanks for watching. I'm Mark Licea and you've just been loaded.
