Using Apps on Amazon's Kindle
Natali Del Conte: Amazon opens the Kindle up for third party apps. Nokia brings free turn by turn navigation to all of its phones and Bill Gates wants to share his feelings with you. It’s Thursday, January 21st, I’m Natali Del Conte, and it’s time to get loaded.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to speak about internet freedom today. She’s expected to talk about the ongoing battle between Google and China as one of many issues. She’s also expected to roll out several new policies regarding internet freedom globally. The speech is scheduled for 9:30 AM which is before the taping of this show. If you want to watch for yourself, you can find it at state.gov.
Nokia launched free turn by turn navigation on all handsets in 180 countries. We got a preview of this product last night, here’s a look.
I’m here at a Nokia president where they’ve briefed press on their new Ovi Maps. Now this is turn by turn navigation so that means a voice will guide you where you’re going and it’s been optimized for walking and driving. They say the walking maps will have things like escalators, and when you can walk through shopping centers which are really nice. Now the big news here is that this will be free in all Nokia handsets from here and out. If you’re an existing Nokia customer, you can download this for free as well.
Turn by turn navigation has typically been something that you pay a premium for. This is free in over 180 countries. Nokia says that this is more efficient than Google Maps because their maps reload easier and a bit faster. The apps are also preloaded on the phone so if you turn off your data connection or you have a spotty day to connection, the maps will still be running so you won’t get lost or be stuck if your data connection drops.
Amazon is opening up the Kindle to third party applications meaning there will soon be an apps store for Kindle. Amazon says that certain software companies already have the development came such as EA games. But games on the Kindle, what are we going to play with the next page button.
You can now rent movies on You Tube, we’ve known this was coming for sometime now but you won’t find big blockbusters there as You Tube is starting with independent films. The rental service will feature Sundance Film Festival movies for $3.99 each from now until the end of the month. You’ll pay for these movies using Google check out.
The near times is going to start charging for regular access to its online newspaper. This won't start until early 2011 so you have some time to enjoy it for free. The Times will charge a flat fee for unlimited access but if you subscribe to the print edition, you don’t have to pay online. Times executives are not ready to disclose on specifics on price up but they did say that the price would fluctuate in response to economic conditions and reader demand.
Microsoft is suing TiVo alleging infringement of patents that have to do with the interface and a payment method as well. Microsoft wants TiVo to stop using this technology and pay money for damage. The lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco Court. AT&T is also suing TiVo for patent infringement and TiVo is calling this move by Microsoft a legal strategy to defend AT&T.
Boxee has announced the payments as soon that will let content owners charge for their content from within the application. Each content provider will be able to set pricing as they see this. For example CBS could charge a monthly subscription while NBC would then charge per show. These are just hypothetical for now. Boxee will charge a small fee for transactions that go through their program.
Firefox 3.6 is supposed to launch today. it’s suppose to launch at 9:30 AM pacific time with new safety features of course and where is to customize the look of the browser called Firefox Personas.
Speaking of browsers, Microsoft is supposed to release an update to internet explorer today. It will fix the vulnerability that allowed the recent attack against Google in China. Microsoft said IE 6 is still vulnerable to some attacks but IE8 is the most recent version so hopefully if upgraded since 6. 03:56 has specific release times so beyond to look out today and upgrade when you’re asked.
Apple has an OS X security fix out as well. This fix has vulnerability in 10.5 and 10.6. Apparently there were problems with the flash player plugging including one that could allow an attacker to take control of your computer if you visited a malicious website so check for updates and install them.
Bill Gates is not only on every social network these days. He also has his new site called gatesnotes.com. It’s not necessarily a blog about his feelings but it will include his thoughts on things like humanitarian work and other issues about the industry, he sold knows and loves. Gates says he will post to the site about three times a week.
