Transcript
The capital city of Lima is a major center where over 7 million people live with modern skyscrapers mingling with colonial residences and poor houses made of mud. The people are a blend of the very backgrounds that have inhabited the land over the centuries. There are more than 7 million people in this city that was originally designed to be a small Spanish administration center. It is pretty crowded but you don’t want to bypass Lima because in all of Peru, the best museums and the best shopping are found here. In Lima, life is quite contemporary and the religion is still predominantly Roman Catholic. The Plaza de Armas is the main square in Lima. It’s a typical Spanish City then it’s broken up into three powers, the city power, the religious power, and the political power as represented by the presidential palace here behind me. The palace’s architectural lines are Spanish colonial as is much of the design around the plaza. With its recent history of political turbulence, the area is also highly guarded, across from it is a large Roman Catholic cathedral intricately ornamented with colonial detail. And as you look out on the streets of Lima, you can see that it’s the pre-Hispanic Inca culture that’s being honored even in these modern times.
