In 1968, the Maryland herd numbered about twenty eight. Today it’s grown to a hundred fifty or so which is the maximum number the national park service fills the area can support. The horses are definitely a hip for park visitors. Note from time the time there are incidents of the horse bite or kill. It’s illegal to feed the horses. Park service officers are diligent in their efforts to keep incidents to a minimum.
