Ocean city beaches and nearby barrier islands are not only Maryland’s playground, but also that of Washington D.C. and other large communities within easy drive. It’s a huge resort, ten thousand hotel rooms and twenty five thousand condominiums on or near the beach. Donna Abbott: Ocean City is just the great family resort. This is a hundred and thirtieth anniversary, its expounded actually as a small—this fishing village in 1875 and its grown to be one of the most popular east coast destination, and the lots of activities here. We have great ten miles of wide sandy beaches and a beautiful bay-side. The water sports are very popular here. And we also have a great rate of cultural history in terms being that small fishing village. It’s just the great place to be if your into recreation or if you just want to relax and take quite stroll in the boardwalk of the beach. I mean Ocean City, it’s got something for every one and I think that’s what makes it special. We do host annually eight million people and at those eight million people. Slightly more than half or around four million come between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That’s our peak summer seasons so yes, were very popular, we’re very well visited but were set up for it and we enjoy hosting people here because that’s our heritage, I mean we were started as a small fishing village but hospitality is the heritage and it is our industry so we take it very seriously and we have a lot fun entertaining all the four million plus people on the summer time. Host: Ocean City’s life saving station is now a museum but not only has excellent exhibits on the brave souls who save countless lives along the coasts but historic Ocean City photos of another era. The popularity of camping, seeing America first and recreation vehicles of all kinds for adults and families of all ages is ever so present here along the eastern sea board. One can’t drive alone. It has five hundreds spaces. A water front team park with western shows, water slides, pools, and even a marina. On the bay side there are fishing piers where to find the real action. Male: They wanted a baby, almost too easy. You push it into the water and then when you feel a tug in you just pull up slowly and you put the net down and you scoop them up. Peace of cake and my first time doing it actually. The buckets getting full, we got to go home. Host: Assateague Island National Seashore is another of Maryland coastal treasures. Unspoiled dunes and white sand beach run the entire 37-mile length of the island. Here to the islands famous wild horses, actually feral horses who are most likely descendants of domestic animals left here by 17th century farmers who use the islands for grazing to avoid colonial livestock taxes. Assateague horses are the sizes Ponies, twelve to thirteen hands probably due to their diet of rugged island and twigs. The island spans two states so the herd is broken into two groups. In 1968, the Maryland herd numbered about twenty eight. Today it’s grown to a hundred fifty or so which is the maximum number the national park service fills the area can support. The horses are definitely a hip for park visitors. Note from time the time there are incidents of the horse bite or kill. It’s illegal to feed the horses. Park service officers are diligent in their efforts to keep incidents to a minimum.
