Visit the Honey Island River Swamp in Louisiana
Across Lake Pontchartrain in the opposite direction honey island swamp, one of the least altered best preserved river swamps in North America. Since 1982 Dr. Paul Wagner and his crew of naturalist guides have been conducting ecological natural history tours in Honey Island.
With all we get the way up over 100 different species of fresh water fish are found here. And a short boat ride to the mountain in Biyani and you can catch all the salt water species of fish. And travelling to the right or downstream and now the river is above maybe eight miles from here, eight to nine miles. Where there the river spills out into the coastal waters and then it goes in directly to the Gulf of Mexico. We are going to turn up river, go way back in the swap.
This is a good start, look at how it goes there and look at that big snake right by the chair. A Diamondback Water snake right on the door. Now if you want to see a lot of snake. You go inside at houseboat, there’s plenty of them hibernate in there. You can see the water is not real deep right here, they were those birds on. They are actually are touching the bottom.
If you are going to walk right there, you will need boots right now. But the water might be about knee-deep. We are going to turn of a river until some quiet water so where the water is still and not moving, where there the water is a little warmer. Now the great moss you see on the tree is called is called Spanish moss. The great color is a natural color, it’s living and growing. We could see alligators on both sides of the boat. I am going to turn the boat around so that you can see them.
Now both of those look like they are good seven feet long so those are average maybe a little bit above average - two of them. The American Alligator get 14 to 16 feet, the males, females is 8 1/2 to nine feet.
I hope it is not one of those jumping snakes. We can see some more snakes; some of them are going to be stretch out on limbs. On the left over here you can see some camps and I want to mention for is all state property. Except for those camps are on a one stretch of land is owned by one person, put a camp on those lease to land from. The state property beyond is just down those camps.
