What High Blood Pressure Means So high blood pressure also known as hypertension simply put is an elevated measurement of the arterial pressure in the body. Most often it’s taken in the upper arm. It’s done at almost every doctor’s visit. If you have three elevated readings on serial measurements your diagnosis is having high blood pressure. In general we take the number of 140/90 as being hypertensive. And what this means for the body is that the organs have high blood pressure coming through them and because of that they have negative effects. They can lead to heart attacks, stroke and kidney disease. It’s a very common disease and over 50 million Americans have it and probably a billion people worldwide. In fact it’s the most common primary care diagnosis and is usually caused by lifestyle and very rare cases genetic factors.
