Christine: Welcome to watchmojo.com, I am your host Christine and today we'll continue our segment on memory focusing on multi-sensory processing with Dr. Angela Chan. Dr. Angela Chan: Multi-sensory memory is the engagement of as many sensory modalities as possible to assist memory. Now what is a sensory modality? In psychology, that means just your sense of say vision, sense of touch, sense of hearing, sense of emotions, sense of taste, sense of temperature. So that's your physical senses. Now if we think of our experiences, our childhood experiences, if we smell some flowers, even into our adulthood if we smell the same flowers, we realize that oh, I recognized that smell. Similarly, for tasting certain kinds of fruits and also how the sense of touch, the way mother touched us will be very well remembered. So if we can incorporate that into our memory system, we can remember much better. Christine: Can you give us an example? Dr. Angela Chan: Yes. Well, let's use the similar example we have had in our last session, like when you parked your car at E5. Okay, how do we remember that? Now, perhaps you can elaborate with your senses this time, E5, what's there out there with E? Perhaps an elephant, E, E for elephant. Well, an elephant can stink. You can remember that sense of the fresh manure of elephants and well you can paint that elephant orange, so that visually you see the orange elephant smelling like well, elephant manure and then we can further elaborate it by thinking of now, you hear a heavy stomping sound coming towards your car and stomping onto your car. Well, that's scary enough and perhaps well, it's not so bad after all because now well, your dilapidated old, old car has gone and you can get your dream car, the Mercedes E500 to replace it. So again E5. So with these elaborations I guess, it's most likely to help you remember than just saying E5.
