What should women know about restless legs syndrome? Dr. McPherson: Women who are wondering about restless leg syndrome should know that it often can occur in families. It is often a clinical diagnosis that’s made based on the patient’s symptoms. People usually have symptoms in the evening, and at night when they go to bed they have an unusual discomfort in their legs. It’s often difficult for them to describe what it is, what it feels like. People often feel better if they get up and walk. And then once they go to bed, it can cause people to wake up throughout the night, usually most severe in the earlier parts of the evening or night and people generally feel better in the morning and during the early morning hours than they do in the evening and at night.
