When to Get Your Child Braces
Dr. Travis Stork: Today is all about at what age you need to be on top of specific medical issues that can affect you and your loved ones.
Before the break, we read a letter from a mom named Lou Ann. She wants to know when her daughter should get braces. Our cameras followed them to the office of orthodontist Dr. Dunia Gailani where we got the scoop.
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Most people want to know, when is the right time to get braces? Most of the time, children get braces between the ages of seven and eleven.
Casmina: I have tooth canines going and into my two adult teeth so the braces have to push these together so that these teeth will come in.
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Casmina is here today to start her treatment with us. We will be placing braces on her upper front teeth and we will be correcting some spacing issues and correcting her overbite. Ready for the braces?
Casmina: Uhuh.
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Alright. The first step in bonding braces is putting a gel etch. This basically just cleans the surface of the teeth for us. The next step with be actually placing brackets. So, as you can see, placing braces is easy as one, two, and three.
Now, that I've touched the bracket positioning to ensure that they are on the right teeth spot in each tooth, we are going to go ahead cure this cement. After this, we are going to go ahead and take the retractor out on and you will get to pick colors to your braces.
So here is our color wheel, which colors would you like to get today honey?
Casmina: The fluorescent green and of course some yellow.
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: She will be wearing her braces along with some appliances for a period of about 12 months.
So by the time the wire into the bracket, the wire can then activate them and start moving the teeth. Alright Casmina, we are all done. How did it go?
Casmina: Good. Now I'm excited to show all of my friends.

Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Thank you.
Dr. Travis Stork: And you got a couple of different type of braces that are available for kids nowadays, right?
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Yeah. We have endless numbers of braces but I brought a few examples to show you.
We have — these are the standard metal brackets that can be tied in with clear or colored choices which the kids love. I also have these ceramic brackets that are little less visible, lower profile. Adults tend to like these but the kids love them too. They can use them with colors also. And we have the option of clear aligners. This is usually what people call invisible braces. There are series of aligners manufactured to fit the patient that the patient wears during the day and then remove to eat and brush and changes them out every two or three weeks.
Dr. Travis Stork: I like those.
Dr. Jim Sears: My daughter uses some those right now and I forget she has braces.
Dr. Travis Stork: Although, Lisa you— Lisa said that you want braces so some people wear glasses even they do not need them. We got some of those really metallic looking ones for her.
Dr. Dunia Gasilani: Absolutely, we have grills now. We can put some bling in there for her. Whatever she wants—
