Winterizing Sprinklers

Protect your sprinkler system with these winterizing tips.

Amy Matthews: When the temperatures start to cool down, you need to winterize your sprinkler system, if you don’t, it’s not gonna work when you turn it on in the spring. Male 1: We’ve got to winterize your system and winterize is big work; take the water out of the system. Male 2: Every year we have to come with an air compressor and we have to turn off that primary valve in the basement and put the compressor on and take all the water under the lines, otherwise you know what happens, it will freeze and split. Male 1: The water inside the sprinklers will freeze you know, it will expand and it will break. The poly would freeze and the water inside the poly will freeze in it, break; and then it’ll make your system, it ruins your system so you have to that, it’s really important. Male 3: Sometimes I’ve seen the valves actually freeze and split because there’s no way for the water to go. That’s essential especially in the northeast region. You must winterize your system over here. Male 4: We need to evacuate the water for average reasons to the freezing. That’s either done one of two ways there’s either a drain valve at the end of it’s zone at the lowest point zone, you open the drain valve and let the water flow over a slow period time or if you don’t install drainage valves you can put, use a compressor, somewhere around 70, 90 PSI and then you could blow the water out of the system so you don’t have to hurt your thumbs through the winter.
